How to Keep Warm While Babywearing
Dressing Your Baby
-
Layer up: Dress your baby in light layers - dressing for indoors (even if you are headed out on the wild winter day)
-
Cover the extremities: Pay special attention to your baby's head, hands, and feet. Opt for a hat/beanie rather than a hooded jacket so it can’t get caught. And socks rather than footed onesie as built-in feet can ride up in a carrier and squish little one’s toes.
-
Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton to avoid getting sweaty (as this can end up making you and your little one colder, especially if the wind picks up)
Dressing Yourself
-
Light inner layers: Same as Baby - dress indoors with light layers
- Wear an oversized coat or hoodie: After dressing yourself and your little one in light layers, put on your carrier with your baby and THEN add your warm outer layer, zipping or buttoning up both you and your Baby together into a cosy cocoon. (Leaving the top undone for your Baby’s head to be completely outside the coat/jumper)
- Babywearing jackets: Some brands offer jackets with a built-in carrier panel, providing warmth for both of you.
Best Baby Carriers For Winter
-
LILLEbaby Elevate - the Linen outer shell and soft cotton lining is perfect year round. Keeping your baby cosy warm in winter, while also being lightweight and breathable for summer.
-
MOBY Classic Wrap - 100% cotton MOBY Classic Wrap is a bit thicker (and warmer) compared to the MOBY Evolution and MOBY Elements wraps, so is the best choice for a winter baby.
TIP: pre-tie your MOBY Wrap BEFORE going out, so you don’t end up dragging the ends on the wet ground if you’re putting it on while you're out!
- MOBY Easy Wrap - Also made from 100% cotton and easier to use. So unlike a MOBY classic wrap there’s no risk of dragging the ends on a wet ground while taking it off and on.
Additional Tips
-
Front carry: This position offers the most warmth for your baby as they are closest to your body heat.
-
Check your baby's temperature regularly: Ensure they aren't overheating. Look for signs like sweating or flushed cheeks.
- Limited Layers between you: the closer you are to skin to skin the easier it will be for you to monitor (and regulate) your baby’s temperature.
-
Adjust layers as needed: Be prepared to remove or add layers depending on the weather.
Remember: Every baby is different, so it's essential to monitor your baby's comfort and adjust their clothing accordingly
